Please read this before acting on anything you find on Retirement in USA. By using this site you accept the terms set out here.

General

Everything published on retirementinusa.com is general information for a general audience. It is not professional advice of any kind. We work to keep it accurate and current, but circumstances differ enormously from one household to the next — what is sensible for one retiree can be a poor decision for another.

Not financial, tax or legal advice

Nothing here is:

  • personalised financial planning, investment advice or tax guidance for your situation
  • a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any particular investment, annuity or insurance product
  • legal advice on estate planning, powers of attorney, debt or benefit appeals
  • a determination of your eligibility for any government programme

For advice about your own circumstances, consult a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), a CPA or enrolled agent for tax questions, or an elder-law attorney for legal ones. Free and low-cost help is available: your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) provides unbiased Medicare counselling at no charge, the Eldercare Locator connects you with local services, and the National Foundation for Credit Counseling offers nonprofit debt counselling.

Benefits, figures and eligibility change

Social Security rules and cost-of-living adjustments, Medicare premiums, deductibles and plan availability, IRS thresholds, and state tax treatment of retirement income all change — usually every year, sometimes mid-year. A figure that was correct when an article was published may not be correct when you read it.

Always confirm current figures and eligibility rules with the administering agency before actingSSA.gov for Social Security, Medicare.gov for Medicare, and IRS.gov for tax. Decisions about claiming ages, enrolment windows and withdrawals can be difficult or impossible to reverse.

Health content is not medical advice

We publish articles touching on health — symptoms, nutrition, medications, healthcare costs and related subjects. This content is general information only. It is not a diagnosis, a treatment recommendation, or a substitute for care from a qualified professional who knows your history.

  • Do not start, stop or change any medication, supplement or treatment based on something you read here. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist first — this matters especially for anything affecting blood sugar, blood pressure, blood thinners or heart medication.
  • Do not delay seeking professional advice because of something you read on this site.
  • If you think you are having a medical emergency — including signs of a stroke or heart attack — call 911 immediately. Do not wait, and do not look it up first.

Products and services

Where we discuss products or services, that discussion is based on research, published specifications and publicly available reviews — not on hands-on testing of every item mentioned. Pricing, terms, features and availability change. Verify current details with the provider before buying, and check that something fits your own needs.

External links

We link to third-party sites, including government agencies, nonprofits and retailers. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or privacy practices. A link is not an endorsement of everything on the other end of it.

Scams targeting older adults

Retirees are deliberately targeted by fraud — fake government callers, Medicare card scams, grandparent scams, bogus investment offers. We will never contact you by phone or email asking for money, Social Security numbers, Medicare numbers or bank details. Neither will the SSA or Medicare, who do not cold-call asking for payment or personal information. Report suspected fraud to the FTC or the SSA Office of the Inspector General.
