Portugal supports between 10,700 and 14,800 American Social Security recipients. The D7 Passive Income Visa requires monthly passive income equal to 100 percent of Portugal’s minimum wage, set at €920 per month (€11,040 annually) for single applicants. Adding a spouse increases the requirement by 50 percent (+€460 per month). Consulates also require proof of an active cash savings buffer of at least €11,040 in a Portuguese bank account. Applicants must apply from a consulate in their home country, as applying within Portugal on a tourist entry is prohibited.
